Nouns, verbs, and pieces

How Wise Arabic groups vocabulary items, and why the distinction matters in review.

Wise Arabic groups vocabulary into three types: Nouns, Verbs, and Pieces. Each type is reviewed differently because Arabic words ask different things of you.

The split roughly follows the classical Arabic distinction between ism (اسم), fi'l (فعل), and harf (حرف), but the labels are kept practical for learners.

Nouns

A noun is any Arabic ism (اسم) that functions as a standalone word. This category is broader than the English word "noun".

Nouns include:

  • ordinary nouns, such as كِتَاب (book);
  • proper names;
  • adjectives, because Arabic treats them as ism words;
  • many participles and verbal nouns when they function as standalone words.

A noun usually needs three kinds of recall:

  • Arabic to English;
  • English to Arabic;
  • singular to plural.

That is why nouns can appear in both the Nouns review group and the Plurals review group.

Verbs

A verb is an Arabic fi'l (فعل). Wise Arabic normally shows verbs in the dictionary form: third-person masculine singular past tense, such as كَتَبَ (to write).

For verbs, pay attention to:

  • the past form;
  • the present form;
  • the root;
  • the wazn or form;
  • the masdar when it is given.

Verb review focuses on translation in both directions. The present form is shown with the verb where useful because learning only the past form is rarely enough.

Pieces

A piece is a useful fixed item that is neither a normal noun nor a conjugatable verb.

Pieces include:

  • particles and prepositions, such as لٰكِنْ (but) or مِنْ (from);
  • fixed phrases, such as مِنْ فَضْلِكَ (please);
  • functional expressions, such as بِالنِّسْبَةِ إِلَى (with respect to);
  • adverbial expressions, such as طَبْعًا (of course) and جِدًّا (very).

The test: if treating the item as a noun or verb would make you study it in the wrong way, it is probably a piece.

Pieces do not have plural review. They are reviewed through Arabic-to-English and English-to-Arabic cards.

Why this matters during study

The word type tells you what you will need to recall in Review.

  • For nouns, check the plural before you add the word.
  • For verbs, notice the present form and root where they are available.
  • For pieces, learn the whole expression as a unit.

This prevents a common mistake: saving a word as a simple Arabic-English pair when what you really need to learn is its plural, form, usage, or fixed phrase behaviour.
