A Study Plan can follow either a Book or a Pathway. Both give you an ordered place to continue; the difference is where that order comes from.
- Books follow a textbook.
- Pathways follow a learner goal.
Books follow textbook order
Choose a Book plan when your Arabic study already has an external sequence. Wise Arabic then helps you build and review the vocabulary that belongs to that sequence.
A Book plan is useful when:
- you are working through a specific volume;
- you want chapter-by-chapter vocabulary support;
- your class or teacher expects textbook progression;
- you want Wise Arabic to reinforce, not replace, your main course.
With a Book plan, the next step is usually simple: continue the next chapter, add useful words, review them, then move on. You do not need to save every word in a chapter: mark it complete once you have taken what you need.
Pathways follow a goal
Choose a Pathway when you want structure but are not studying through a textbook. A Pathway orders collections around an aim, such as general vocabulary, media, medicine, Islamic studies, or business.
A Pathway is useful when:
- you want a syllabus but not a textbook;
- you want vocabulary for a specific field, such as news, clinical Arabic, Islamic studies, or business;
- you need a broad base before specialised vocabulary;
- you want Wise Arabic to suggest the next collection to study.
Pathways are not just topic labels. They are ordered, so the earlier material should prepare you for what comes later.
General Foundations vs a specialised Pathway
Every Pathway shares the same broad foundation: the everyday words, questions, numbers, and phrases that any learner needs first. The specialist collections arrive gradually, woven between the shared ones, and take up more of the route as you progress. This allows you to build a wide base alongside a focused area of interest. So, for example, choosing Medicine does not mean learning only clinical terms: it gives you general Arabic while also preparing you for hospital-specific discussions.
The choice between General Foundations and a specialist Pathway is therefore more about where you are heading than where you are starting from.
- General Foundations is for learners with no specialism in mind. Along with the shared foundation it widens the focus, going deeper into a number of areas relevant to daily life: feelings, food and dining, the rooms of a home, and describing people and things.
- Specialist Pathways, such as Medicine and Health or Business and Professional Arabic, carry the same foundation and build the vocabulary of one field on top of it.
Either way, finishing your first Pathway leaves you with a working general vocabulary. On a specialist route it also leaves you with several hundred words of your field.
Broadening Horizons: the step after your first Pathway
Once you finish a Pathway, the suggested next step is Broadening Horizons 1. It builds on the foundation you have already studied rather than repeating it, and works through the rest of the library: more feelings and personality, animals and nature, geography and the Arab world, and the opening collections of every specialism. A learner who came through the Business route still picks up some news, health, and culture vocabulary here.
Broadening Horizons 2 continues with a second round of new collections, weighted toward harder material.
The intended sequence is one Pathway for your goal, then the Broadening Horizons routes to keep widening your base. A second specialism also works at any point: the shared foundation is already complete, so only the new field's collections remain.
You can mix structure and exploration
Your Study Plan gives the default next source. It does not define your whole vocabulary.
You can follow a Book plan and still add media vocabulary. You can follow a Medicine Pathway and still add Qur'anic words. You can have no plan and still browse Books freely.
All saved words enter the same My Vocabulary list and the same review schedule.

Common mistakes
- Do not choose a Book plan just because it feels more serious. If you are not using the book, the plan will become noise.
- Do not delay a specialised Pathway because you feel you lack the basics. Every Pathway includes the foundational everyday vocabulary alongside its specialism, so you can start with your goal from day one.
- Do not keep a plan you are ignoring. Change it when it no longer reflects your real study.
